THE STORY OF JAMES GREENE'S UNLUCKY DAY

I knew it form the moment I woke up that it was not going to be a very good day. It was Friday the 13. And to make it even worse, it was Friday the 13 of March.! I thought about this as I lay in my bed. Then, very carefully I put my right leg on the floor first, and got up. I went into the shower and slipped on a soap-on-a-rope, and hit my head. As i got up I saw moons and stars, and I had to sit down on the toilet to calm myself down. I bowed three times to my right to turn my luck, and got into the shower. Nothing bad happened in the shower, I dropped my soap and got shampoo into my eyes but that's nothing new. I put the radio on as I was getting dressed, and I started so singing along to one of the songs.

When I came down for breakfast my mother had made me a real English breakfast, with eggs (mine is boiled, though, I don't like it fried), toast, tomato beans and bacon. But - alas! As I sat down I noticed that my knife was pointing towards me! And as if that wasn't enough I managed to spill salt when I was putting some on my egg. Quickly I threw some over my left shoulder, and started eating.

My little brother came running, he was late for the bus and mum was going to tie his shoelaces. And guess where my stupid brother put his trainers? Right - on the table! This surely didn't seem to be a very good day. My father asked me to put some sugar into the tea, which I did. And distracted as I was, I even stirred his tea! I got so upset by this, that I left the table. It wasn't until I got upstairs that I remembered that I hadn't crushed the eggshells which were left of my egg. Now I was convinced this was not going to be a good day.

I was late for the bus, so I run downstairs and straight out the front door, yelling "bye" to my mum and baby sister on the way. As I got out the door, I froze. I had forgotten that the electrician was going to come today to fix the light over our door, and of course he had put his ladder up so that one had to go under it in order to get out of the door! My oh my what a morning! Too late to go back, I continued running, keeping my fingers crossed hoping that nothing was going to happen before we got to school. As I got to the bus stop I dropped my glove. The bus was coming, and there was no one around who could pick it up for me! I looked around desperately. but no one came. Well - I had to ask the bus driver to help med. Luckily he is also rather superstitious, so he didn't mind getting out of the bus and picking it up for me, but some of the other kids thought it was rather silly - we are already late for school.

We arrived at school safe enough, but as I was going up the stairs to our classroom I had to pass a lot of people, so I kept my fingers crossed all the time. After this my fingers hurt, an I could hardly write anything the first half of the day without any big accidents, I did break my pencil quite a few times, but that's normal, since my dad always buys the cheapest ones to be economical. I don't know how economic it is, since I'm constantly sharpening my pencil, but that's another story.

Anyway - it was lunch time and my class was queuing up for school lunch. I knew this was going to be difficult, so I was prepared. When I took the cutlery I kept my knife in my hand, so it shouldn't turn against me. Unfortunately I managed to drop it on the floor, and as I bent down to get it one of the bigger boys pushed me so that I fell and hurt my nose. With my knife in one hand and the tray in another I moved on to get lunch. I caught a glimpse of the chef - she was stirring our soup anti-clockwise! Bad,bad sign. Well - I got my soup, my four fish fingers and my chips and sat down to eat. When I looked down at my fish fingers, I saw them forming the number 13! I got so surprised I yelled out "oh, no!" and the girl sitting next to me got so surprised that she dropped everything she had in her hands. And guess just what she had in her hands? Oh yes, indeed - a mirror. But instead of worrying of the 7 years of bad luck which would follow her now, the girl yelled at me for scaring her, so that she couldn't put her lipstick on. I decided it was not going to be a nice lunch anyway, so I left.

I sat down on the grass outside, and decided to stay there until it was time to go to class again. Suddenly I saw a black cat coming towards me! What a luck, and the cat seemed friendly at the same time. Unfortunately it wasn't interested in joining me, so it just sniffed my hands and then went around the corner. I was alone again, but not for long - a ladybird landed on my knee. I managed to get it to climb unto my finger, and as it flew off I mumbled "Ladybird, ladybird fly away home, your house is on fire and your kids are gone". Hoping this could change my luck I made a wish (can't tell you which one, because then it won't come true!), and followed the ladybird as it flew. It didn't fly far away - in fact it landed only two feet away from me - on a four leaf clover! I picked up the clover, and thanked the ladybird for helping me out. As I got up to go to class I spotted a magpie flying across the sky. I looked around desperately to see another one, but no one was in sight. What a pity!

The rest of the school day was OK - nothing much happened, except that on the way home I noticed that the cows were laying down. I got home safely and when I went into our street my neighbour's dog came and bit my leg. I didn't worry  - it does that every day, so I just kicked it off, and went into our house. By now the electrician had removed his ladder, and I could go in safely. Or so I thought. In the hall my little brother had been playing with his marbles, and of course I had to step on them and fall and hit my head. It didn't hurt much, but I waited until my mum came running anyway, to get some comfort. When she had assured that I was OK, we went to have tea in the kitchen. Assuming I was still weak after my fall, my mum put sugar in my tea, and stirred it. I didn't have time to protest, so I decided I might as well just drink it. When we had finished tea I turned my cup upside down and waited for all the liquid to come out so I could read the tea leaves. I'm not an expert like my grandma, but I think I saw several dots, meaning money, and a heart. Which means love. Good, I thought, and went to do some homework.

The rest of the evening was all right - I managed to stay away from unlucky situations, and when my mum came to tuck me in, I told her that I was so happy the day was over. "Why is that?" she asked. "Haven't you noticed that it's Friday the 13th?" I asked. "Oh, sweetie, that's tomorrow!" my mum said. "No way," I cried " I have it right there on my calendar!" " I'm sorry, honey, but you must have pulled off two days at the same time," my mum said. I took a closer look, and she was right. I had been worrying all day for bad things to happen - and it was the wrong day! Typical, isn't it. Well anyway - now I was convinced that nothing bad could happen when the REAL Friday the 13th came, but the real Friday the 13th turned out to be even worse then the day before. But, that's another story, and I'll tell it to you as soon as I get these bandages off my fingers.
